In this third of three posts about the 2013 Murphys show I cover the American Daffodil Society awards for miniature daffodils.
The Miniature Gold Ribbon is for the best miniature daffodil excluding the Historic and Container Sections. It happens that the flower was a seedling exhibited by its originator so it also won the Miniature Rose Ribbon. The flower is seedling 08-6-01 10W-W exhibited by Jon Kawaguchi. Notice the nicely scalloped rim on the corona. The perianth segments do twist, but they all twist the same way and therefore maintain symmetry.
The Miniature White Ribbon is for the best set of three miniature daffodils. The winning exhibit was ‘Polar Cub’ 2W-W exhibited by Harold Koopowitz and Marilynn Howe.
The Lavender Ribbon is for the best collection of 5 miniatures excluding the class for 5 American-bred miniatures. Exhibitors of the winning collection were Harold Koopowitz and Marilynn Howe. The flowers are – 08-045-4 5Y-Y, 09-032-10 8W-Y, 08-033-4 11aY-Y, 09-032-9 8W-Y, 08-050-3 5Y-Y.
The Miniature Red-White-Blue Ribbon is for the best collection of 5 American-bred miniatures. The winning collection was exhibited by Harold Koopowitz and Marilynn Howe. The flowers are – ‘Little Dianne’ 8W-WPP (Koopowitz), 01-014-2 12W-W, ‘Itsy Bitsy Splitsy’ 11aY-O (Koopowitz), X-03-8 12W-Y, 09-014-3 5Y-Y.
The Bankhead Ribbon is for the best collection of 9 miniature daffodils from at least 3 RHS divisions. Exhibitor of the winning collection was Jon Kawaguchi. The flowers are – Back: ‘Classic Gold’ 10Y-Y, ‘Montongo Group’ 10Y-Y, ‘Sundial’ 7Y-Y, ‘Hummingbird’ 6Y-Y, 05-3-01 10Y-Y (N. bulb. var. nivalis x N. bulb. var. tenuifolius); Front: ‘Pakotai’ 12Y-Y, ‘Picoblanco’ 2W-W, ‘Tiny Bubbles’ 12Y-Y, ‘Oregon Petticoat Group’ 10Y-Y.
The Watrous Award is fro the best collection of 12 miniature daffodils from at least 3 RHS divisions. Exhibitor of the winning collection was Jon Kawaguchi. The flowers are – Back Row: ‘Snipe’ 6W-W, ‘Golden Symphone’ 5Y-Y, ‘Leota Mill’ 2Y-YOO, ‘Pequenita’ 7Y-Y; Middle Row: ‘Tony Goode Farrer’ 10Y-Y, ‘Picoblanco’ 2W-W, ‘Moncorvo’ 7Y-Y, Elka 1W-W, Connie No. 1 10Y-Y; Front Row: KB-BH-5-07 10W-Y, ‘Tiny Bubbles’ 12Y-Y, ‘Medway Gold’ 7Y-Y.
The Three Miniatures by Hybridizer Ribbon went to the exhibit by Jon Kawaguchi. The flowers are – 06-352-01 10Y-Y (‘Diamond Ring’ x N. bulb. var. serotinus), 06-337-01 10Y-Y (‘Apollo Gold’ x ‘Oregon Petticoat Group’), 08-6-01 10W-W (‘Cornish Cream’ x N. cantabricus). The flower on the right won the Miniature Rose and Miniature Gold Ribbons.
The Six Miniatures by Hybridizer Ribbon went to the exhibity by Harold Koopowitz and Marilynn Howe. The flowers are – ‘Little Dianne’ 8W-P, ‘Little Pinkette’ 8W-P, ‘Puppy Love’ 2W-WPP, 08-021-10 2W-WPP, 03-036-17 8W-P, 99-114-8 11aW-P. Note that they’re all pink cupped miniatures.
The Twelve Miniatures by Hybridizer Ribbon went to the exhibit by Harold Koopowitz and Marilynn Howe. Last and most is the Premier Miniature Collection Ribbon for the best exhibit of 24 miniature daffodils from at least 5 RHS divisions. The winning exhibit was by Harold Koopowitz and Marilynn Howe.
