The American Daffodil Society 2015 national show was held at the Fort Magruder Hotel in Williamsburg, Virginia April 10 and 11. I’ll show the ADS award winners in three postings. This posting has the awards for a single standard cultivar. I’ll go in the order in which they’re listed in the official show report.
The Gold Ribbon is for the best standard daffodil in the show excluding the container classes and the ADS Challenge classes.
The Rose Ribbon is for the best standard seedling exhibited by its originator in the show excluding the container classes and the ADS Challenge classes. This seedling also won the Intermediate Ribbon. The Intermediate Ribbon is for the best bloom in the Intermediate Section and the standard collections (i.e., excludes the container classes, the ADS Challenge classes, the single stem classes, and the 3-stem classes). At this show, the best intermediate happened to be in the intermediate collection.
The White Ribbon is for the best set of 3 standard daffodils in the show.
The Matthew Fowlds Medal is for the best named standard cyclamineus hybrid in the show.
The Olive Lee Trophy is for the best standard daffodil in divisions 5, 6, 7, and 8 in the show.
The Grant and Amy Mitsch Trophy is for the best exhibit in a class of 3 stems of one standard seedling exhibited by its originator.
The Youth Best Bloom Ribbon is for the best bloom in the Youth Section of the show.
The Youth 3 Stems Ribbon is for the best set of 3 in the Youth Section of the show.
The Small Grower Ribbon is for the best bloom in the Small Grower Section. Exhibitors in this section grow 50 or fewer cultivars.
The John van Beck Medal is for the best bloom in the Historic Section. The winner was one of the stems in a set of 3.
Here’s the award-winning set of 3 historics that also included the best bloom in the Historic Section.
There’s an award for the best bloom in the Classics Section and an award for the best single stem exhibit in the Classics Section. This bloom won both awards.
The Classic 3 Stems Ribbon is for the best set of 3 in the Classics Section.
There are three classes in the Container Section, one each for standards, miniatures, and species. The exhibits are grown and shown in containers.
The William Bender Ribbon is for the best bloom in the ADS Challenge Section. Daffodils in the Challenge Section may be grown in greenhouses and are not allowed to compete for the Gold and Rose Ribbons for which the exhibits must be grown outdoors. So the Bender Ribbon is like a gold ribbon for the Challenge Section.
Okay, this is not a daffodil; it’s the best entry in the Photography Section of the show. It’s simply titled Landscape.
This takes care of the awards for a single cultivar of a standard daffodil. I’ll next work on a posting of award winning exhibits that have more than one standard cultivar.
