Answer for Large Bulbs

Below is a question that came in from Daffnet’s Contact Page. Hopefully someone has some thoughts or an answer to this question. Nancy

“What is the world record for single daffodil bulb size? I found one yesterday that is nearly 3 inches cross and as tall. I grow thousands of daffs and have never seen anything like it. This big bulb is from a common variety, I believe Mount Hood. I literally have been growing thousands of daffs for about 15 years, and this is a real anomaly in my garden.

Do you see common varieties getting large like this in your garden?”

  1. I don’t see large bulbs like that in my yard in middle Tennessee, but I recall the huge bulb Rod Armstrong from Texas brought to an ADS Fall Board meeting for a bulb raffle several years ago.  He might recall its size or weight; I do not, but it was surely a Texas-sized bulb!

  2. In this case size does not matter denesness and weight does, a good size, hard bulb for the variety with plenty of rings of skins will always produce the beat flowers

  3. Sometimes I have bulbs of standard cultivars with similar size. It seems that some years a cultivar will do extremely well. Probably, for me, the cultivar which consistently has huge bulbs is Avalanche.

  4. Perhaps the enquirer should check out my post of May 18th 2007 entitled ‘Bulbs.” Then they can decide if their bulb is bigger.
