Blooming in GA Since Dec 19th!

I’m not sure if this is a portent of blooms to come …. what I thought was a bit of paper catching my eye, in one of my beds, turned out to be a very early-bird

Bridal Crown.

Avalanche of Gold followed on December 28th ….

I’m beginning to wonder what is a “normal” bloom time!

  1. Darrin, I’m more impressed wtih your use of tricolor St. John’s wort, Hypericum moserianum ‘Tricolor’ as a bedding companion with your daffodils!   It’s such an amazing plant:  it’s easy, it tolerates shade, sun; it never gets too tall or too agressive (at least for us, and we’ve grown it for probably six years now); and it makes a wonderful companion to bulbs that can easily emerge through it.  http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/gardens-gardening/your-garden/plant-finder/plant-details/kc/k590/hypericum-x-moserianum-tricolor.aspx

At Thanksgiving, on the farm in central Illinois I had several tazettas pushing 10″ tall, and one, ‘Brentswood’, was pushing stems.  Jonquils from ‘Hillstar’ breeding were also several inches tall, throughout the field.   None are flowering yet, but wow, they are so early for us.  And in Saint Louis, where I live, ‘Rijnveld’s Early Sensation’ was blooming at Christmas, basically 1.75 months too soon. I firmly doubt that 2013’s show season will be ‘normal’ again.  Not with this kind of energy already apparent in our gardens.

Happy New Year, and thanks for posting your pictures!

  2. Thanks Jason! I am a sucker for variegated plants and if they have yellow and red in them, I tend to load up my cart. I also have lavenders and Lonicera nitida (Boxleaf Honeysuckle) ‘Baggesen’s Gold’ growing in this bed.
