First florets

My daffodil season began this morning with 3 daffodils flowering. Sometimes tazettas flower here in February. This year they are relatively late, presumably because we have had a long warm summer without strong temperature or moisture signals to initiate the bulbs.

  1. Beautiful plants, the green one is particularly interesting to me, Lawrence.

  2. Extraordinary flowers, Lawrence. I see some characteristics of N. elegans in the first one, some of Soleil d’Or in the second one, and some of N. elegans or N. viridiflorus in the third one. Can you tell us the parents?

  3. Thanks Bob, Theo.

I’ve added some photos of them from today.

All of them are early because of their elegans ancestry.

The pedigree for 14_01T is 09_11T x Gold Stanza. 09_11T is a First Stanza seedling that I have since discarded. I expect 14_01T will suffer the same fate in due course.

14_05T is 09_26T x First Stanza. 09_26T is an 8Y-O from the Soleil D’Or pollen parent of First Stanza. That makes it more inbred than I would like but it explains the roundness of the florets.

14_03T gets its green from elegans. I reported its pedigree last year as (N.elegans x Union Road) x (First Stanza x ?). Union Road was a diploid tazetta 8W-Y collected in Western Australia – probably N.t. lacticolor or similar. My database queries whether the seed parent is actually First Stanza but I think the given pedigree is believable.
