Lawrence T has opened the southern season with his flowers from Canberra , Australia and Robin Hill has some nice miniatures and species in his pots .It is MOTHERS DAY in NZ today ; always second Sunday in May .The supermarket floral departments have a good selection of potted flowers – hyacinths , cyclamens , Tete a Tete and beautiful big pots of chrysanthemums .I took my old mum two big bunches of tazettas . One was the very clean all white papyraceus – paperwhite line , raised in Nelson by John Hunter from Bill Welch seed and distributed As flowering bulbs by John H .
The other was a tall , strong bunch of TAHI , another from Bill Welch seed and raised and registered by Max Hamilton .Tahi , Maori for number 1 – one , is the first of five selections from the cross, all very fragrant , but a different fragrance from the paperwhites . Quite an asset for any flower but it can be a little overpowering in confined areas , small rooms . After good recent rains , 70 + mills last week , the first of the standards are also making a move .
I have one bloom out from a 09 seedling selection , a very starry looking 2Y – Y , with perhaps a slight orange hue in the cup .
There are a few buds in the first of the yellow trumpets , also seedling selections .
Also in bloom and part of my mothers day delivery , are a range of beautiful autumn flowering proteas .
