John and Marie Hunter have a much colder winter than we have in Otaki; plenty of the high sunshine hours Nelson is known for, but also quite severe frosts.
Yet for many weeks they have been flowering many different seedlings that trace back to the very good work John did with Viridiflorus in the 1980’s . The next generation of Emerald Sea seedlings has given an amazing color range of very early flowers, both single and multi heads.
Two nice singles here, both with nice fragrance, from the cross J A H 21 – 95 (Glaston – x – Cul Beag) – x – Emerald Sea
Note the lobing in the cups; a viridiflorus trait.
Thanks to Logan, the Hunters teenage grandson, for technical assistance!!
Absolutely beautiful. What wonderfully broad and smooth perianths. As a hybridizer with viridiflorus, I’m green with envy.
