importing

Friends,
A friend called me last night to say that the Australian bulb exporter from whom he had ordered bulbs could not get his bulbs inspected for export to the U.S. unless the American recipient had a permit to import bulbs. He says it’s American law, and doesn’t apply only to Australia. Getting an import permit is free, but it does take some time. Has anyone else had this experience?

  1. Hi Mary Lou,
No import permit is required from New Zealand to the USA however a Phytosanitary Certificate is. For the phyto it costs us close to $800 for soil inspection and bulb inspection. It seems strange therefore that an import permit would be required from Australia. The export requirements are often written in such a way that several interpretations can be made of them.
