In Memoriam Posted in the September 2016 ADS Journal

Hi daffnet,

I’ve had my September 2016 ADS Journal for a week or so now. Jolene Laughlin did a marvelous job.  I got use to the change in font very quickly. But it just hit me on page 52 the “In Memoriam.”

There were five members that we will miss in the daffodil world.  I have lost three friends named in that article:

Barbara Tacy

Betty Hartzog, and

Eileen Whitney.

Barbara Tacy I met when she attended ADS Judging School I In Barco.  She also attended  School II and doubled up that year by taking School III at the National Convention in Baltimore.  I was immediately drawned to her by her humanity and intelligence.  We exchanged many email over the following years and some telephone conversations. Fran and I met her husband at a National Convention.  They were enjoyable people.  I will miss my discussions of bulbs with her.

Betty Hartzog was introduced to me and Fran by Beverly Barbour the year that Betty was a novice at the Georgia Daffodil Show back about 1999.  Fran and I instantly adopted her and through the years we stayed in contact, mostly by email.  We enjoyed seeing her when we got to Georgia.  I loved the crazy email cartoons, and “infamous” saying that she picked up off the internet and set to us.

Eileen Whitney I first met at the NJ Daffodil Show in Morristown.  She was always polite even when making a point.  I truly appreciated her guiding me and helping me get my first Show Schedule approved and published, and our first Barco Show to be successful.  She was so generous with her time and knowledge.

We will miss all three.

Clay

  1. Thank you for sharing your memories, Clay. It seems like the ADS has lost a lot of great people in the past year. Those of us who are new don’t know much about them so it’s nice to hear the stories and be able to honor them as well.

    Best wishes,

    Jolene
