Kate Reade

Dear All,

Nial Watson just asked that I let Daffnet members know that Kate Reade has passed away. Kate was awarded the American Daffodil Society Gold Medal in 1992 and she will be missed by her many daffodil friends around the world. Kate gave us beautiful daffodils to remember her with such as ‘Port Noo’, ‘Irish Trip’, and many other gorgeous daffodils.

We send our condolences to Kate’s family.

Sincerely,

Nancy

  1. I feel very fortunate that my trek on Planet Earth–intersected the path of Kate Reade. She was a treasure.

  2. I’m so sorry to learn that Kate has passed away.  I was fortunate to have enjoyed her hospitality at Carncairn Lodge many years ago.  She was always cheerful, and she left us many beautiful daffodils.  My condolences to her family.

  3. What a sad autumn for daffodil lovers–Clive and Tony and now Kate Reade. I counted Kate as one of my dearest friends. We met in Williamsburg in 1973, at the first ADS convention for us both. Kept in close touch throughout the years. She stayed with me and Herman after the 1997 convention and went to school to tell my Twentieth Century class about her work during the early WWII years.
Then Mary Price and I visited with her at Carncairn on our last trip to Europe, 2001.Robin was still living then, and it was such a good good visit.

With tears in my eyes and sadness in my heart!

  4. Kate Reade often visited Marie Bozievich and stayed at her home while either going to or coming from the ADS National Conventions.  That’s where I met her and became her friend, while Fran and I were living with and taking care of Marie during her final years.  Kate was a delight to talk to and have “tea” with in the late afternoons.  I grew and still grow many of her daffodils.  We had many long discussions about daffodils and I think she influenced my way of showing daffodils as much as Marie did.  It’s with sadness that I read these posts about her passing.

  5. I loved Kate, she always hugged me and we talked flowers. She was a professional artist as well. I have a picture of N. cyclamineus in the snow by her. I look at it every day and feel warm.

Her yard in Cairncarn was a wonderful place to shelter animals and people from N.Ireland’s harsh winters.
