Minnesota Show Wraps Up the Season

The Minnesota show this past weekend (May 16-17) wraps up the 2015 season.  We had 12 exhibitors (including 4 Youth!), 296 entries, and 624 stems.  Not a record by any means, but a very good showing considering our yo-yo weather the past few weeks (several swings of 50’s to 80’s and back again).  No “imports” from other regions this year, either – all local.

Michael Berrigan’s stunning Red-White-Blue USA collection (all five blooms being his own seedlings) won four of the ADS biggies: Gold for 07-114-1 Evesham x Dunley Hall 3 W-Y, R-W-B ribbon, Purple ribbon, and Rose (best seedling) for 07-114-1 Evesham x Dunley Hall 3 W-Y.  Michael also took the Throckmorton, again using 15 of his own seedlings.  His hybridizing hobby is turning out some amazing blooms!  (Photos taken on Sunday, so they are past their prime – sorry.)

Since Bob Spots will post the rest of the ADS awards as soon as I get the report to him, I thought I’d mention some of our local Challenge classes:

We have a “Perspective Award“, calling for 7 stems, each from separate decades – won by Edie Godfrey with Roseworthy 2 W-P 1948, Avenger 2 W-R 1957, Crimpelene 3 W-O 1968, Exalted 2 O-R 1972, Pol Voulin 2 W-P 1983, Magic Step 2 W-P 1996, and American Rainbow 2 W-WWP 2007.

To encourage the public to plant more daffodils, we have a display board with photos of all the past Wister winners, and as many blooming examples as possible.  We also have a Challenge class for a 5-stem “Wister Collection“.  This year Ethel Smith won with Camelot 2 Y-Y, Salome 2 W-PPY, Intrigue 7 Y-W, Misty Glen 2 W-GWW, and Actaea 9 W-YYR.

We also honor some of our late members, one being a “Karnstedt Cup“, 3 stems each of 5 different cultivars.  Edie Godfrey won with Ruth Crouch 2 W-P, Limey Circle 3 W-WWY, Soprano 2 W-GPP, Webster 9 W-GYR, and Malin Head 9 W-GWO.  Our late friend Denis Daley loved 2 Y-R daffodils the best, so we select the best single stem 2 Y-R out of the Youth, New/Small Grower, and standard classes to honor Denis.  This year Gary Cohen won with his small grower entry of Great Gatsby 2 Y-R.

We also try to not take ourselves too seriously, so we have a “Worst in Show“.  Five entries gave stiff competition, but Kathy Julius took it with a “winged” Canadel 3 W-GYR.  Show visitors are always amused that we have such a class!

We were excited to have three previous Youth exhibitors return, plus one new one.  We are really trying to encourage them!

One bloom made people stop over and over again – Gary Cohen’s Sabine Hay 3 O-R (Best New/Small Grower winner).  He also had a vase of 3 that stopped visitors in their tracks.  Regrettably I did not get a photo of that, but here’s the single stem winner.

This single Sabine Hay 3 O-R, and a vase of 3 of the same, stopped visitors in their tracks

We had a good show – looking forward to 2016 already!

  1. Margaret, thank you so much!! Beautiful pictures!! And glad to know about Michael’s new
seedlings…without your postings, we would not A Throckmorten all of his own cultivars is
    approaching Bill Pannill status.
And I do like your extra classes, that make people think about the flowers. Congratulation,
Edie and Ethel. And Gary’s Sabine Hey is gorgeous.
We always think about the pictures we didn’t take. I’m still regretting a great CMDS
Throckmorten of Rod Armstrong’s I didn’t photograph, five years ago.
