More miniatures flowering in Canberra

Hi
Some more photos of what is flowering in Canberra now.
I like your splits and the viridiflorus seedlings Lawrence. We have some split bulbocodiums but they flower a little later. What we do have flowering is a miniature 11Y-Y that is perfect because it has 6 segments that sit on the petals. It is KB-M-11Y-Y-1-2004 so we have had it for while. It is meant to rain today so it has been moved into our tractor garage to preserve the pollen along with some miniatures that will be the seed parents.
A number of seedlings in the photos are very high quality 6W-Y’s. If only there was a show in early August!!
The miniature 1W-W is not exhibition quality but it is very useful for hybridising.

  1. Hi Graham,
I have had a number of 6W-Ys which have flowered for about three years then disappeared. Do you find this a trait for the colour combination? Fortunately some have selfed and the first flowers are about to open so maybe, like the species, they survive by seed rather than by long lasting bulbs.

We are still growing miniature 6W-Y’s that first flowered around 1990 so it is not a trait where the pots are regularly refreshed with new soil. We have also been growing Rod’s Swagger for almost as long. We lost a few Swaggers because we used a bad soil mix one year but otherwise they have thrived. For our dry crosses like Good Friend the biggest enemy is too much water in summer. For our wet crosses the biggest enemy is letting them dry out in summer.
I have probably written that one of the other myths is that N. cyclamineus does not divide. We have lots of N. cyclamineus that split. We also have N. triandus that divide.

  3. Yes, I have the species which divides regularly too. Interesting about the bi-colours. Mine were in a damp, shady position.
For the species I reckon I have three distinct clones that flower about a fortnight apart and have distinct form differences. Its a good job some young botanist wanting a thesis topic hasn’t got hold of them otherwise we would have three new species.

  4. A better photo of KB-M-11Y-Y-1-2004 that shows just how perfectly it splits in alignment with the petals.
