N. panizzianus vs. N. pachybolbus

Over the years we have had quite a bit of argument between these two small flowers that are often considered to be subspecies of N. papyraceus.  This is the first time I have had them flowering at the same time and it makes it easier to compare the two forms. Narcissus pachybolbus is from Algeria while N. panizzianus appears to be more widespread. My bulbs of N. pachybolbus originally came from Lindsay Dettman in Australia and I have seen it grown in a number of collections over there. The major differences as I see it are. Despite having smaller flowers, about 15 mm in diameter, N. pachybolus, is a standard sized plant and can carry more than 10 florets to the stem. Narcissus panizzianus is a dwarf plant and the flowers are in excess of 20 mm in diameter, and with fewer flowers to the stem. Narcissus pachybolbus is somewhat incurved while N. panizzianus has a flat perianth. Narcissus pachybolbus has a much smaller corona and the three protuberant stamens tend to more-or-less fill the cup. I cannot detect any fragrance in N. pachybolbus while that of N. pazzianus is light and to my mind delightful.

First picture has N. pachybolbus at the top and N. panizzianus at the bottom, while the second picture is a close-up of N. pachybolbus.
