Narcissus viridiflorus

The daffodil season  for 2014/2015 is starting. I began watering in mid August this year as opposed to late September in 2013. The first of the N. viridiflorus is open with more to come.

Narcissus viridiflorus is endemic to the FAR south of Spain, Gibraltar, and N. Africa (High Atlas and Morocco). I find the species itself difficult or at least finicky outside here in Oregon. It grows like a weed in California. The stocks are maintained in a cold greenhouse.

The new hybrids using N. viridifloreus may appear much hardier but this seems entirely dependent on the clone chosen for propagation. It has been reported that a number of growers in Holland lost entire stocks of Selections being propagated over the unusually warm and wet summer of 2011/2012.
