No Blues Blues

Reading other’s tales of the elusive pursuit of ribbons (Darrin & David Adams) and spending too much time in repetetive tasks related to bulb digging, cleraning and storage, propelled some words to emerge from my feeble mind, you might find interesting. With apologies to Wordsworth (and Ogden Nash) I offer the following ditty. The verse can be sung to a tune of “The Yellow Rose of Texas” (like most Emily Dickenson poetry). The chorus can be moaned anyway you like
No Blues Blues
Each year the daffy catalogues are sent and lure me to invest in what the merchandiser claim to be their very best. The reason for this impulse purchase Really isn’t clear although the price that I have paid is often thought quite dear
I plant the bulb and pray for it through winters stormy blast And when its snowy mantle finally disappears at last and leaves and buds emerge from the cold earth victorious a bloom appears that is no question absolutely glorious
I snip it, primp it stage it and put it in the show for all the folks to see and oooh and aaah and really envy me. When some time later I return and find, without a clue the damned old lousy flower never even got a blue.
Chorus: I’ve got the no blue blues I’ve got the no blue blues the damned old lousy flower never even got a blue.
No hope of being honored awarded “Best in Show” But no sense spilling but a tear What do those judges know? I’ll lick my wounded pride and then Do it again – next year.
Chorus (repeat)

  1. Yes, I think Denis’ lyrics deserve a blue! Becky

  2. Denis, I loved it but where on earth did you get the bulb that produced that “damned old lousy flower” – or maybe I should not ask!? Brian

  3. I usually get them from the same place that produced the “victorious” ,”glorious”, “ooh -aah” flowers.
By the way. Has anyone ever been on a panel of more than 3 judges where the selection for “Best in Show” was unanimous?
