New Zealand growers and exhibitors will be saddened by the passing of Bob MacDonell , on Thursday 12 January , after a long illness .
Bob was for many years an active member of the N Z D S and the Central Daffodil Group .Bob came into daffodils after several decades of rose exhibiting , to top national level . He quickly moved through the Daffodil grades to contest at top open level with considerable success . Bob particularly enjoyed the British Raisers Class , winning frequently . With his scientific approach to growing , he soon mastered the art of pot culture , bringing forward the later British , particularly the very late Irish beauties , to use them successfully at the early shows . He was a show personality we have all missed in the last few seasons .
Our thoughts are with his wife Heather , their two daughters and grandchildren .
Bobs funeral is on Tuesday 17 January , 11 am , at the Beauchamp Funeral Home , 167 John F Kennedy Drive , Palmerston North .
It is hard for all to lose a top exhibitor, especially one with distinct showing areas. The shows won’t quite be the same. Best wishes to his family.
