Word has just reached me that Handy Hatfield died last October; I knew he was in a facility and thought I would be contacted but just found out tonight. In his day he was an avid competitor; a hybridizer, and had an photographic memory when it came to his daffodils. He was an ADS Life member; member of CODS and my mentor.

Handy was an extraordinary exhibitor. In the late ’80s and early ’90s he used to visit Sid DuBose here in California. They spent their time selecting and naming cultivars from Sid’s fields. Should they enter our show, the Best In Show and RWB Ribbon were usually theirs. I was told that he once won Best in Show in eight consecutive shows in the MidWest.
