Spam

Hi Folks,

This is not necessarily a Daffnet priority however tonight I received a posting from Janet Hickman MD. I believe Janet is a daffodil grower and the only place our addresses are likely to be linked is through daffodil related media. When I suspiciously replied direct to Janet before opening the attachment I got a no address reply. I suspect that you should treat such an e-mail as spam and maybe dangerous should it come your way.

  1. Nial,

Thank you for alerting me that the spammers have struck.  I apologize for the inconvenience and hope others on Daffnet will see your posting and be forewarned.  I’ve done what I can on my computer to shut them down.

  2. Thank you for your understanding Janet. I thought it better that people were alerted rather than have someone get their computer ruined.

  3. Janet,

They got me last year, I’m sure many will remember, I thought I had rid myself of it but then it happened again and everyone in my address book got a spam email from me twice!

After 3 weeks I found the answer, my email account had been hacked and all  needed to do was change my email account password! It worked!

  4. Just to be more clear, "Daffnet" is a web forum and normally email is not sent to members. For the 10% of members that prefer emails, we do maintain the old Daffnet mailing list which forwards all posts and comments from the web forum via email.

The Daffnet mailing list is 100% moderated, meaning we read and verify every message before it is emailed to members.  Since some of the people in this discussion are on the ADS board of directors mailing list, please note that this list is 100% moderated too.

I am confidant that the spam some of you noted was sent to contacts in your personal email program, not via daffnet.

  5. Thanks Ben, your comments are noted and appreciated. Be assured I did not assume that daffnet was the problem, only that it was the best forum to advise people of a problem. I did not have Janet’s e-mail address to contact her directly. How Janet and I were linked continues to be a mystery as we have never had any personal e-mail conversations. As with Loyce it was a reference to an Oprah website

  6. In recent weeks I’ve had quite a few emails, involving daffodil friends with whom I have regular correspondence, that involved a reference to an Oprah Winfrey website. I’ve chosen to disregard and delete all these emails, but suspect they were spammers, also.
