Two Hobbies Cross Paths

I am a radio ham, W9ZSJ, and have dabbled in that hobby since I was 13. Very early this morning, Mary and I both awoke and couldn’t go back to sleep. I moved to my office/ham shack where there is a recliner chair which serves me well in such instances, serving as a soporific. But I passed the ham gear and couldn’t resist, so I sat down to see if anyone was up for a chat. (On the radio I “chat” almost exclusively using Morse code.)

There weren’t many stations on, but down near the bottom of the band was a weak but readable signal. My goodness! It was from New Zealand, and soon we were “chatting’, exchanging personal info and doing what hams do. Tony lives in Hawera! While I have grown it for years and though we had it in our local sale as part of one of the small collections we sold, I had never wondered how/why it was named Hawera. Now, thanks to Daffseek, I know, and I’m waiting to hear whether Tony knows anyone named Thomson who may be related to Dr. William M. Thomson, who registered Hawera before 1928.

That’s the first time these two hobbies have crossed paths for me, and probably the last.

  1. George,

Remember Spud Brogden lives very close to Hawera and will be known to many in the district as a builder and a Rugby referee as well as his gardening interests which are more than just daffodils.
