John Hunter has a host of viridiflorus and Emerald Sea seedlings flowering in Nelson , mid winter here but they have been giving tall , strong growing and fragrant flowers when little else is flowering .John has had a few strong frosts already in Nelson but it does not deter these very vigorous seedlings .Emerald Sea is proving to be an exceptional parent , both seed and pollen , an exception flower that is producing the goods for many hybridists .Here are a few photos from John .
A good selection of Emerald Sea seedlings ; finding fertility in the next generation may be a little more difficult .
Emerald Sea open pollinated , John suggests from the seedling it was probably selfed .Most from this batch closely resembled mum , the best selection was very smooth , a little broader in perianth and no reflexing .
Twilight Zone – x – Em S. gave this very smooth , pale yellow selection .
.Another very attractive flower from Loch Loyal – x – Viridiflorus , a cross that gave a good percentage of nice flowers .
I have been using Emerald Sea , chasing early doubles , for three seasons now .Very few standard seedlings have emerged yet , not unexpected , but these Emerald Sea OP seedlings , two year olds , are well away , showing it,s very early habits .
