Wanganui Horticultural Society held their Spring Show on Saturday 19 September .This is regarded as the prime weekend for regional shows as it is the weekend between the North Island and South Island National Shows .I exhibited at Rongotea , 2 days before and was unable to make Wanganui . A big thanks To Wilfred Hall who did the show report for our bulletin and provided the intermediate photos . I was short of a Champion Bloom photo until Brian came to the rescue with his good phone photo . Wilf reported 535 vases – probably the biggest show in our region this season , and a very good standard . The numbers were boosted with a group of enthusiasts from the Taranaki Daffodil Club — this gave extra depth through all the grades .Only 4 photos – these three are all very impressive intermediates bred by Wayne Hughes . He has made a big move in his intermediate breeding program and at all shows this season has produced some spectacular flowers .
Just how circular is this very bright intermediate 2Y – R
A very neat , full length trumpet intermediate , 1 W – OP , orange pink tones .
Soft pink tones on this intermediate 2W – P that attracted Wilf .
Champion Bloom 2Y – R NAVIGATOR exhibitor BRIAN Mackenzie .
Brian makes a big contribution to all the daff shows in our region ; always keen to help with setups and dismantling etc . He also stages more flowers than most as he is the very regular stager for John Hollever and put flowers up for John at all shows this season. He does it very well and has a good eye for the flowers and neat , balanced threes . WELL DONE Brian .
It is also fitting that he should win with NAVIGATOR , a beautiful , big , John Hunter registration .
Brian is a very keen and committed GEO CACHER ; at all shows away from his Palmerston North home base , he comes equipped with his phone / G P S and usually has a task in hand . From the Otaki show he left to locate the Cache at Waikanae ; 400 metre STEEP climb . After the Normanby show he headed West and found the Cache at Cape Egmont .He is a very fit 70 + is Brian , the NAVIGATOR .
Two pigeons ( Kereru ) were usually in the tree , watching .
I always hope they take off ; they are very heavy , poor flyers but spectacular in mid air .
They have been ” flavour of the month ” , in N Z this winter .
