squirrels eating bulbs

I do not see much evidence in my yard of squirrels eating bulbs. Maybe that’s because they are all standing around the tree in the morning waiting for me to go out and fill the bird feeders with sunflower seeds so they can get the spillage. They don’t even hide, they’re so brazen (yeah, I do scatter some for them too).
What I have observed over the years though is that if you leave evidence of freshly dug soil from planting minor bulbs, that is a squirrel magnet. Whether they eat them or not, I don’t know, but they will dig them up. They seem to be very curious creatures.  So I try to leave the top looking undisturbed after planting. Pat it down, scatter some mulch, whatever.
