Help – how far in advance of show can I pick?

Hi,
Shelter Island is having their show this Wednesday and it is VERY late. Most of our daffodils are faded but a few late ones have just come out this weekend and are looking showable right now. There are also some really lovely pink cups that just opened up and will probably burn tomorrow.
I can’t recall how long blooms can potentially be saved in a fridge before a show. I’m trying to decide if I can pick Saturday for a show that’s being judged Wed morning. I know its chancey but is it hopeless? The daffodils on Shelter Island are almost gone but a few late bloomers are looking good right now. Or are they likely to stay freshest in the ground? Tomorrow is supposed to be hot and sunny again but Sun – T is supposed to be cloudy and damp in the upper 50’s.
This is all complicated by the fact that I will be away until noon on Tuesday before the show making everything nightmarish unless I can pick on Saturday or early Sunday.
Any advice is appreciated!

  1. Karen, last year, those of us in Cincinnati experienced a very early spring and with our show not until April 5 we started picking in early March. Many of our stems spent 3 weeks in the refrigerator and looked good for show.
    I noted that some of those stems went back home after we tore the show down the next day and back into the refrigerator. They were then seen two days later in the Columbus show.
    A non-frost free fridge works best, but if you don’t have one of those old things, use a spray bottle to mist the flowers in the fridge once or twice a day to keep it damp in there.
