When to pick for show

Good Morning,

I would like to know when I shoulc pick a reverse bi-color that I would like to take to a show.  It is open now, but the color is not developed yet.  Do I pick it now or after the cup whitens up?

The only flowers that we will have in our shows are local grown ones and I want to take as many varieties as possible for the public to see.

Thanks,

Mary

    Hi Mary,
Good question.  I always wait until the cup has whitened on reverses before I pick them.  I’ve been told that they don’t reverse once picked.  I guess it would be worth experimenting to see if this is true.  The only exception to waiting until the cup has whitened is an approaching wind storm, snow, sleet etc, which would ruin the bloom.

  2. They will definitely reverse if picked several days ahead of the show. I just picked several — Chesapeake Bay, Hicks Mill, Xunantunich and a couple of others — all were yellow, and all reversed in about 2 or 3 days in a cool room without heat or much light. Our weather reports were horrible and I wanted to get them before it poured.

  3. I am doing an informal survey on the cultivar Chicken Hill-
how big it gets when healthy, color and reversing
how well it grows- I am planing to measure mine
tomorrow- anyone know the usual bloom size?
I had thought that it was a large bloom and
wonder about the size I am getting

  4. My Chicken Hill did not seem to be super large — I guess I would term it a mid-sized flower. it is probably the same size as Xuxantunich and slightly larger than Hicks Mill.
