Merrill, I’m happy to say I don’t have bears!  Thankfully!!  I’ve had quite of the few of the critters George wrote about, including the woodpeckers, since I have a house with cedar siding, too.  The last time the house was painted, the painters filled the holes–and the house looked like it had chicken pox with all the white filler everywhere!  Mostly I have downy woodpeckers, but I’ve seen the occasional pileated woodpecker around.  And I’ve had raccoons get in between the outside siding and the inside walls.  Apparently they chewed a hole through the siding under the eaves to get in.  I hired a professional to trap them and take them away.  He got 5 or 6, plus a few squirrels.  I didn’t ask where he took them.  :-)
I think maybe I won’t complain so much about moles and deer anymore after hearing about your bears, Merrill.  I actually caught a mole a week or so ago in my seedling bed.  Just happened to walk by when he was “working.”  He won’t be working anywhere anymore . . .
