Subject: Peter Buckley – RHS President

It is with tremendous regret that I have to inform you of the sudden death of our President, Peter Buckley.  He died early this morning, peacefully after a short illness.

Peter has been a hugely dedicated and loyal President of the Society since 2006.  He has taken Council forward to develop and embrace a new strategy for the RHS, whilst upholding the charity’s core values and heritage.

His ability to understand all parts of the organisation and the complexity of its operations was remarkable and his absolute passion for the people, plants and campaigns like Britain in Bloom was obvious.

His tireless enthusiasm at all the shows and Chelsea in particular was phenomenal.  He hosted fundraising breakfasts starting at 6am, followed by meeting and greeting people from all parts of the horticultural and gardening arena as well as the Royal family.  He would join international and exhibitor lunches, award the President’s own special awards and then continue into the evening at sponsorship events.  Through all this his passion for the RHS shone through.

Peter joined Council in 1998, became Treasurer in 2002 and was a member of the following committees:

Business Committee

Contracts with Trustees and Connected Parties Committee

Gardens Advisory Committee

Fundraising Sub-Committee

Investments Sub-Committee

Nominations and Appointments Committee

Pensions Sub-Committee

Remunerations Sub-Committee

Shows Advisory Committee

Woody Plant Committee

Peter did all this whilst carrying on a full time role as Chairman of Caledonia Investments.  In his spare time, Peter was a passionate gardener and continued to develop his own extensive gardens in Scotland.

He will be greatly missed by so many of us both inside and outside the organisation.

In his role as President he has been supported by Mary, his most dedicated wife, who was always at his side at Chelsea and so many other events.  Our thoughts and prayers go to her, their two daughters and family.

If you have a message of condolence for Mary and the family, I would be happy to forward it for you if you send it to my email address.
