“galloshes”

Do any of you get the impression. as I did, that
the stems were cut at the bulb with some mechanical device-
by stems I mean ALL of the green. I expect that these bulbs
would not have much chance of recovery- was there a
research article on how much a bulb suffered losing the bloom?
I seem to recall a judge stating that picking the flower
ruined the chances for a show bloom the next season and
that a quality bloom would take three years after pulling the flower.
My feeling was that even pulling the stemdown from the basal plate would
cause minimal loss of flowering- next season-am I wrong?

note the “galloshes” I referred to. Before I trimmed the bottoms, they looked as if they had been dipped in rubber.
