Nothing Special – early blooms – Isles of Scilly

I have no idea how wide their market is, or what regulations imports may have imposed.

As to the white bits at the base of stems – daffodils, at least for the early market, are pulled (rather than snapped) to avoid splitting and having to trim too much off.  I expect pulling doesn’t do much for the bulbs.  Maybe they are completely replaced in summer ready for the next year.

I have seen blooms on sale here for 2 or 3 weeks.

In any case I hope that the Isles of Scilly daffodil industry is of interest.

      If you wish to read more about the daffodils from the Isles of Scilly
     and Cornwall there is a book on the subject that I can recommend, it,s called 'Golden Harvest'
    by Andrew Tompsett, published by Alison Hodge, listed price is£12.95 but I have seen it cheaper on eBay.
     The mine crop of daffodil are the tarzettas which reach our shops here in the UK well before Christmas.
     
    The book has lots of wonderful pictures even one of Ron Scamp!
     
    Andrew was the guest speaker at the Daffodil Society AGM a year or so ago and has good understanding of the industry on the islands and South West  of England.

    Very interesting info about how to follow up on the beautiful blooms in my kitchen. They are prettier today, and what a gorgeous color. See attached. And, note the “galloshes” I referred to. Before I trimmed the bottoms, they looked as if they had been dipped in rubber.

    There are still remnants of the daffodil trade in southern Illinois. This location was as far south of Chicago so as to be able to load the picked blooms in the early morning  and get them to the market in Chicago for the day’s trade.
