I found the same whitish tepals in N hispanicus. I had the impression it was only in the older flowers that the tepals did become whitish. It seems likely that the hybridizers selected against that character
Yes Yuan I am convinced now in the case of N provincialis what by the way a synonym is of N pseudonarcissus
Ben, this is the first I’ve heard that N. provincialis is a synonym of N. pseudonarcissus. The RHS Register lists it as a separate species, first described by Pugsley in 1939. It’s in the Pseudonarcissus Section, but still considered a separate species. Perhaps the proposed RHS project for a revision of the classification of the Narcissus genus will shed further light on the subject.
