Tilling in mustard plants for the soil

We mentioned that several universities are working on the research about tilling in various varieties of mustard plants (and other plants) to help in controlling different diseases and pests.
I stopped yesterday to take this picture as two weeks ago there were two home gardens on one street that were solid masses of Florida Tender Green Mustard in fabulous bloom. When I got around to actually going by to get the photo all of the gardens were tilled up and only this tiny strip of mustard was left off to one side of one of the garden plots.
I visited for half and hour with the 81 year young gardener. Her father owned this whole block at one time and it was one big garden. Her neighbor actually lets her garden on his land. Her grandfather was a blue eyed “black” share cropper. Anyway she caught me sneaking around taking photos of her garden:-)) When I explained why I wanted the photos she just thought that was the funniest thing. As she kindly informed me that black farmers had known about tilling in mustard in your vegetable patches for generations….She seemed really sad to confess that her grand son had moved in with her and he did not know the difference between a mustard plant and a dandelion. During the Great Depression white folks came to her father so he could teach them how to raise plants and feed themselves. Keith Kridler Mt. Pleasant, Texas.
Interesting the size of houses in the not too distant past. Small houses that were heated with wood stoves. Teeny bit larger homes heated with propane or natural gas, then brick mansions of the late 60’s early 1970’s. KK
