Hi Daffnetters ,
Still rather chilly and slow in the Daff paddocks at the moment ; not unexpected as we are just past the shortest day.
The weather guys said it was just after 6 – 30 pm N Z time Saturday 20 June.
However for one grower in our area , the season is almost finished.
The photo of the mass planting shows the growth in a block of about 8 acres of one variety of an exceptionally early trumpet.
The grower , Neville Muir of Ohau ,started with 3 bulbs of a seedling he noticed in a Christchurch gardeni n the early 1970 ,s.
He bought these north , initially growing at Waikanae , just south of Otaki , and for the last 20 years at his current site.
Most seasons, the first bunches are in the market for Mothers day – early May and the picking is usually over by the end
of June. The slow start to this season will see a few marketed in early July.
Can our Northern daff folk relate to a yellow trumpet in mid season flush on your shortest day – daffs for Christmas.
I purchased a bunch at my local supermarket , last Friday , just after taking the photos.
