Hawera

Hi  Daffnetters,
The  season  is  winding  down  here  ,not  a  lot  to  flowers  and still  about  10  to 12  days  ahead  of  normal.
Hawera , a smll  south  Taranaki  town  was  host  to  a  very good  one  day show  on  Saturday .

Hawera  Horticultural  Society  have  Spud  Brogden  as  Presedent  and  Joy  as  Secretary-  treasurer ;  you know
they will  organise  a  good  show ..
Open  grade  judge  was  Andrew  Jenkins and  Wilfred  Hall  sorted  the  other  sections .
About 400  stems in  total ; a  few  of the guns  were holding their  best for  next  weekends South  Island  National,
the  standard  reflected  the  season ;  a lot  of good flowers  but  the  really  exceptional  were  hard  to  find …

Champion  Bloom

  4 W – P  —  J F M  –  08 – 58  —  J F M Daffs  —breeding  –Valley Storm  –  x  –  Peopl,s  Princess.

Valley  Storm  is a Colin  Crotty  sdlg  164 – 81  bred  —  Eclat  –  x  –  1976  sdlg  …
Probably  coded  2 W – W P R  , — a  semi  flat  cup  flower  with  good  colouring  from  Eclat .
It  was  Colins  recommendation  many  years  back  when  I  was  requesting  well  coloured  flat cup  style
flowers  with  very  strong  stems  and  necks to  take  a  double  . A  good  choice  thanks  Colin .

People,s  Princess,  which I  have  unfortunately  lost  , was  a  very  good  quality  exhibition  level  double  and
for  a couple  of  seasons  ,I  found  a  few  stamens  and  made  a  couple  of  big  crosses  from  Valley  Storm
and  Valley  Dream , a  similar  flower .About  15  selections  ,  most  with  very  good  red-pink  tones , have  been made …

John .

  1. This is a great photo of  important men to the daffodil world.  I enjoy reading your names, seeing the great blooms you show and hybridize and now to see you in photo. Thanks so much, I have enjoyed your “season”.
