Opening attachment/s

Hi Daffnetters, There were two replies re non-successful opening of our attachments. We were able to open and see the attachment that came back via Daffnet, assume most others could successfully open also (?????). Maybe someone could save what we sent, and re-send to Laura Baxter and Deborah Green. Many thanks, Brian Mackenzie

  1. I couldn’t open it either. The problem is that it was sent as winmail.dat, rather than being sent as a file with a recognizable extension, such as jpg, so the computer is at a loss of what software to use in opening it. If you resave your file as a jpg with an identifiable file name, such as nicedaffodil.jpg, and then attach it to the message, it will be readable by all. Melissa

  2. My machine would not let this file come through and Bill Lee couldn’t open it. Laura and Deborah were not alone.

  3. I can’t open these attachments either. I snooped into the “winmail.dat” file with a text editor and saw references to IPM.Microsoft Mail.Note within a lot of binary garbage, resembling a compressed text file. By googling IPM.Microsoft Mail.Note I found a lot of hits related to winmail.dat. Here is a site with some explanation of the problem:

It seems to be a “feature” of Outlook, and it is not evident to me right now what you have to do, as an Outlook user, to avoid this. It is a pain for the reader to have to run some app to de-crypt the attachment, i.e., few will bother.

  4. I believe, as I told the original poster privately, that when you use “richtext” in Outlook it creates these indecipherable attachments. One needs to switch the message html or plain text format to eliminate them.

  5. Hi Daffnetters,
I want to thank Nancy Ellis for converting Brian’s file so all Daffnet members can view it for their enjoyment!
