Introduction

I just joined, yesterday, and wanted to introduce myself. Jamie Vande in Cologne, Germany. Some of you may already know me, and my interests in Hemerocallis, Trillium and aril Iris, amongst other plants. As I am getting more into apline gardening, I want to branch out into Narcissus and try my hand at hybridizing. Due to the lack of printed material on the genetics of the genus, I decided joining a forum would be a good way to tap into information.
I have no idea what the chromosome count is for the genus and its species, which genetic barriers are known, colour inheritance, etc. I’m all ears (eyes)! I am planning on concentrating on smaller forms, such as N. cyclamineus, N. bulbocodium (and related), plus want to try my hand at N. viridiflora. Any recommendations for literature would be appreciated.
Looking forward to an interesting Winter.

  1. Welcome, Jamie:
If you like to travel internationally, you might enjoy coming to the ADS Convention in Murphys, California, from March 11-14, 2010. We expect that the show there will include perhaps 1000 stems of miniature hybrid narcissus, and many interesting viridiflorous hybrids from Bob Spotts, Harold Koopowitz, and others. You’d have a chance to speak with top daffodil hybridizers from Tasmania, Northern Ireland, England, New Zealand, Australia, and the USA. To learn about the convention, go to http://www.daffodil.org/2010adsconvention/ for schedules and more. We’ll hope to see you there and welcome you personally to this friendly community.
