Tahiti

Hello Donna,

Matthew Zandbergen spoke about  “Suzy” and “Tahiti” in the same occasion. He said that both came to Holland thanks to his visit to UK shows, where he purchased all the bulbs available. He then started multiplying them on a large scale (feeding them extremely well – I remember him telling me: “People say, don’t give much nitrogen. Do not believe it!”). He deadheaded most of them in the first years and then, after many years, he launched tons of these varieties in Holland with much economic success.

Of course, “Tahiti” was named by J. Lionel Richardson in his line of doubles with exotic names.

I wish I could have spent much more time with Mr. Zandbergen. It would have been an occasion to gather much interesting information on post-war developments in the Dutch daffodil industry. But I am sure there are people in Holland who new him well and might want to tell us more about his contributions.

Best regards,

  Henry
