Albany Show – Gold Ribbon winner

I returned yesterday from the Albany, Oregon daffodil show. The Oregon Daffodil Society has shows in Albany and Amity this year, and I decided to attend the Albany show. I gave detailed descriptions of the ADS awards in my postings of the national show and won’t repeat those details for this show. The best standard daffodil was Danger Zone 2W- P shown here. Normally, I’d just tell you who the exhibitor was, but in this case it’s more complicated. The Oregon Daffodil Society shows have challenge classes similar to the ADS Challenge classes at the national show. These are classes for 3, 6, or 12 cultivars by the hybridizer which may be grown by someone other than the hybridizer but entered on behalf of the hybridizer. The ODS rules unlike the ADS rules require the flowers to be grown outdoors so that they are eligible for the Gold (best standard) and Rose (best standard seedling) Ribbons. Like the ADS Challenge classes, the identities of the flowers are concealed during judging, but seedlings are so indicated so that the judges will know if they are eligible for the Rose Ribbon. The Gold Ribbon winner came from the class for 6 by hybridizer. The entry tag gave Jackson’s Daffodils as the exhibitor. Elise Havens grew the daffodils; however, David and Robin Jackson were visiting her in Hubbard and staged the entry. I discussed with several people how we should report the exhibitor’s name, and the best course seemed to be to describe the situation (which I have just done) and let someone else decide.

    2. Hello Dave
      I realized after I emailed(was in a hurry)
that Danger Zone actually IS a Mitsch daffodil
since the Jacksons bulbs are sold turned
to our seasons through Elise’s catalog!
So, since the grower is not known for
heavy handed sales techniques you may not
know that Danger Zone 2W-P is listed on page
      15 catalog number 02-313 for $43 postpaid
(orders under $35 are not postpaid as I read the terms)
If you like, I shall post the mailing address

    3. I saw ‘Danger Zone’ in the field just over a week ago. Most impressive, a seriously good show daffodil – and the stock is small so better get in quick!!! Congratulations to DAvid Jackson for breeding and Elise for growing so well. Without double checking I think it has Mitch bred Parent ot parents. There are at least 2 siblings almost equally good. These all stood out in a field of really excellent flowers as attested in Kirby’s pictures from Albany.
