seized by customs!

This is mainly FYI for our Australian members.
A tiny bit of background……..I’m a papermaker who participates in a yearly, international swatch swap that produces a book.
One of our Australian members had her book seized and this is the recitation of how it was resolved.
Don’t know if it would work for daffodil bulbs but just in case it may give you a little brain food for dealing with customs.

  1. I am currently working a nuclear chemistry program using a fair amount of Gamma and other ionizing radiation.  The amounts of the radiation used to sterilize the packages for customs kills any living organism.  Multicellular organisms might have a few cells survive but the most likely outcome is a sterile package including the bulbs. Gamma passes through inches of metal and a bulb has random molecules ionized by the high energy light.   Large molcules like DNA are easily shredded by the procedure. Seeds will also be killed.  It is interesting to see the results of the radiation.  One of my filters turns Flamingo Pink until the ions have been quenched either by reaction with a chemical ir the ion being removed by reactive air molecules.
olstyrene foam is incredibly resistant to gamma.  If we wreck our atmosphere, the styrofoam cups will not be affected.
