Novice!!!! with 2 questions on propagating and hybridizing

I am a novice backyard daffodil grower who has two questions for knowledgeable daffodil growers.

1. I tried Twin Scaling – 6 bulbs from my yard last fall, and now have over 200 single sprouts out in a 1/2 sand and 1/2 Promix mixture with a thin layer of pine shats on top.  The ants love it, but shouldn't these single leaf sprouts get some fertilizer? – or be moved to actual dirt? if so when? and to what? (should I kill the ants? – I am afraid that their tunnels could create air against the new shoots' roots…)

2. I randomly cross pollinated a few late daffodils last spring with no results (told you I was a novice)….so to get some seeds this spring…do I need to select varieties that are known to produce seed to use as the blooms to add the pollen to? (My guess as to what I should be doing..)
Are their any guidelines or sources as to what types cross with what types, or is this all trial and error?

Any help on these questions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any advice or help.
