Hi Daffnetters ,
It was Mothers Day in New Zealand last Sunday , — May 9 ..
Always a big gift day , our N Z retailers association telling us the biggest gift day after Christmas .
The shops were full of the usual chocolates etc , also increasingly a good range of pot plants .
I had to search through the cyclamens , chrysanths ,orchids and many others to spot just a
few little pots of this well known little beauty , — tete a tete .
For my $ 11 – 99 , mum got this pot , in prime , fresh , excellent condition .
Only 4 bulbs , perched high in the pot ; we counted an amazing 18 buds — flower potential for at
least another two weeks . Good value for money I thought ..
They have travelled an interesting journey to arrive in our shops .
I deal with one of the marketers of potted daffs and was told the tete a tetes ( and others including
Jetfire ) are imported from Holland in temperature controlled containers , arriving in N Z before Christmas ..
They are kept under a strict temperature regime ,chilled for a prescribed period , then potted and grown
on to always flower very close to the required date ..
Our Dutch members will be more familiar with the exact requirements than I ; every year they give you
hundreds of thousands of pots , particularly for Easter . .
Also with the pot were small bunches ot Tahi and also Paper whites , another line of Bill Welch origin ,
From seed sent to John Hunter who gave me the bulbs a few years back .
Cheers John .
