Blue ribbons

Dear all

Your point system is very different to ours here in England I have attached photo’s of flowers I have exhibited this year none of them achieved more than 8..5 points or 85% and yet they were the best blooms in the show the first is Banker an 115mm flower exhibited at the RHS main competition, the second flower is Sheelagh Rowan an 115mm flower score 8 points exhibited at Harrogate and Guy Wilson 114mm exhibited at The Daffodil Society Northern Group late show score 81/2 points. I have also attached the exhibit at the Northern group late show there was no blooms under 110 mm and the points were as follows,

Back row L-R    8, 71/2, 71/2 points

Middle row L-R 7, 61/2, 61/2 points

Bottom row L-R  8, 71/2, 81/2 points

I think you would agree that these are all top quality flowers but under your system they would not win a Blue ribbon.

All you ADS judges what would you have awarded and why, I have no complaint with the UK judges because I would have awarded similar points and when putting an exhibit together  I always evaluate the scoring potential each row to assist me in making sure I have the best exhibit possible.

I am not challenging the ADS system I am just trying to understand it. As Brian says it is very rare a flower here in the UK scores 9 or 90% and yet your rules state to achieve a blue ribbon the blooms must score 90%.

I know that the USA is very large with different climate and time zones but the World is the same. Surly all National societies should get together in a common approach to judging standards this would help all exhibitor to understand the standards that can be achieved world wide and thus improve the general standards. As an engineer if I wanted to understand the performance of an engine I would like to now that the BHP was the same in Japan as in the UK and USA the fuel compsumption was measured with the same standards, etc, etc. why not daffodils.

Regards

Roger
