Plant old forgot bulbs now – HELP!!!

Hello all,
I know that there has been some posts about planting forgot bulbs that sat over winter.
I recently found a bag from last fall and am wondering about planting right now?!? the bulbs are not in great shape but think I can save many.  Some even sprouted small leaves.
When we received bulbs from Hancock Daffodils in the spring (from Australia… their fall is our spring!) and we all planted them that spring when we received them and did not wait until fall. Many rooted and I even got a few flowers that summer.

With the sprouts and all, it seems these old bulbs just want to start the next cycle and it seems natural to place them in the ground and let them do there thing!?!?  :-)

Any quick words of advice? I want to save these bulbs, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!
Rich

  1. I would soak them in water a couple of hours and then plant them in the ground right now. Be careful as the tops will sunburn since they have been in a bag. I like to cover tender transplants with a thin layer of pine needles to partially shade them for the first week or so. Keith Kridler Mt. Pleasant, Texas

I always tell people that bulbs live in the ground, not the garage. Plant right away, give them some water, and most will probably be OK. You just might not get flowers next spring, but you should the following year.
Keith Kridler’s advice of watering and giving some shade is also a good idea.
