Hi Daffnatters ,
The early market seasonis well away in the North Island , particularly in our local Kapiti — Horowhenua area .
The first yellow trumpets have been flowering for 2 — 3 weeks and volumes are slowly increasing .
Erlicheer are a little later — always picked over a longer period than the daffs .
Pictured here , photo a week old , is a very large block of ‘ Yellow Gold ‘ -an exceptionally early trumpet
grown by Neville Muir , not far from the blocks of Dianne and Peter Irwin , John Hollever and myself ..
Muhunoa , about 4 miles east of Ohau is a renown early production area for vegetable and flower crops .
Neville is the dominant grower in the North Island early markets, starting early June this year and now only
a few weeks from finishing ..
Northern hemisphere growers can perhaps relate to the time scale if we say that he had a lot of flowers
before Christmas and finishes equivalent to end of January .
Two large blocks in his late patch ; they are behind a very tall hedge and recieve a lot less sun than
his front ( early ) patch ..
From the picture you can see that the front 12 rows have been picked ; a little more colour in the buds
near the hedge ..They are all picked in tight bud and freighted all over the North Island ..
Never tall stems but always open well at the coldest time of the year .
Cheers John .
