bulbs for breast cancer

Friends, This is Vicky Eicher, a member of ADS, WDS and VDS, and I have a favor to ask.

There’s something about fighting breast cancer that brings out the best in people.  Folks whose budgets are stretched tight still donate! And folks who can afford it donate as much and sometimes more than they did last year!

For the past eight years I have  participated in the Charlottesville [VA] Women’s 4 Miler, a race that raises money for the University of Virginia Hospital’s Breast Care Unit.  Approximately 80% of the funds raised pay for the care, education & comfort of individual patients; the rest goes to research.  And 100% of the money raised goes to the charity.  Race participation fees pay race expenses, and everything else is either donated or volunteer labor!  [See www.womens4miler.com for more information.]

Why am I telling you this?  Because folks who respond to my appeals receive hybrid daffodil bulbs from my garden as part of my ‘thank you.’  And this year was miraculous:  89 folks sponsored me, and I raised almost $3,400, 89% more than last year, which was also a record!

Previously, my sponsors received one bulb for every $5.00, and 25 bulbs for $100.  But my 180 bulbs won’t be enough, even if I changed my formula to 1 bulb for every $10 donation!    So I am in need of unnamed, mystery daffodil bulbs that are looking for homes. My sponsors don’t care about divisions, color codes, etc.; they just love the flowers.

If you have any such bulbs, could you please share them with me?  All of the bulbs I pick up in the VDS and WDS bulb exchanges will go to my sponsors. Some WDS and VDS members, and members of garden clubs, are helping, but I still need more.

I can pick up donated bulbs at the ADS Intermediates Symposium this Saturday, or the VDS or WDS meetings this month.  I will be staying with you at the Tysons Corners Sheraton on Saturday night, and Omar at the Front Desk told me that they would accept and hold items for me beginning on Friday, if my name is on the package.  Just let me know.

Should there be any leftover bulbs, they will be donated to Hospice of the Piedmont for distribution to families of former residents of their Hospice House.

Thank you for considering this.
