Doubles judging

The interesting posts on Doubles Judging have caused me to muse on a related topic. Does anyone know why a daffodil would switch to a 4-fold symmetry (8 rear petaloids in a double, for example) rather than the canonical 3-fold symmetry which is so typical of members of the family?
Do others have the experience that certain cultivars are more prone than others to this 4-fold symmetry? I find that some of my Achduart seems to be “Octduart” each season, and I have other cultivars that do it less frequently.

”Goldfinger’  regularly throws 8 petals for me.
It did the same for the late Harold MacConnell.
One year The IDS show was near April Fool’s Day and he entered a stem under the name ‘Square Deal’.
    And square it looked !
Curiously, a stem of ‘Square Deal’ occasionally shows up with Harold’s name on the tag.
