Earthquake Update

Hi Folks,
Thanks Melissa for the reference sight. The information about the formation and nature of the Canterbury Plains is accurate and it explains why most of the damage has occurred further away from the epicentre. The original sight of the quake is reported there but it has now been changed to closer to Christchurch and only a few Km from our place.
One of the 5.1 aftershocks was even closer to us. It has been nerve wracking for us and for many people. Every few minutes you brace yourself, hoping it is not a big one. At night all is quiet as you lie in bed. A slight rumbling noise wakes you and then there is a thud against the house. You jump out of bed wondering if it is another big one. I have taken to going and sleeping on the couch after that. Mind you I’ve had more hugs from Leitha this week than I’ve had for years. Last night we actually managed a full night’s sleep for the first time since Saturday.
A mate of mine has a farm about ten minutes drive from here. It would be on the flattest part of the plains. Part of his farm has lifted 2m (6′) and shelter belts have parted in the middle moving 4m sideways. Their house experienced no damage. It is incredible that damage has occurred elsewhere and Melissa’s info explains why we have been so lucky so close to the centre.
I visited the Robbs again today. Jeanette is a bundle of nerves. They have been told that it would be better to demolish their house. They also think that they will not be allowed to build again on the same sight, as will be the same for many other Christchurch residents. It leaves uncertainty and many other psychological issues to deal with.
In spite of this Jeanette had some of the best daffodils I have seen this year growing in a part of her garden that largely missed the river running through their property.
