Growing doubles

Hi everyone

Just back from the Dunedin Show – great show with good number of entries.  Lovely people as always.  There was a very nice vase of 3 Kiwi Solstice entered by a novice grower that I’m sure we’d all be very proud to exhibit.  I thought ‘Wow – I wish they’d grow like that for me!!’

Can anyone tell me what factors are involved in the growing conditions that affect the formation of doubles?  How does one increase the odds for good and full doubling?  Is it dryness at the stage that the flower is forming in the bulb?

A few varieties are very reliable but others are immensely frustrating.

Thanks

  1. Noeline, I hope folks from both hemispheres will respond to your question on how to grow doubles well.  What conditions do doubles want?  Here in middle Tennessee some doubles have a lot of green on their backs, some blast, some hit the ground face down when it rains because of the heavy blossoms.  We're thinking of having a program on doubles at our fall daffodil meeting because we're seeing a lot of interest in doubles from new members, so I would love to hear some discussion on this topic.

I would also like any daffodil judges out there to tell us how you judge doubles and I'd love to hear from judges all over the world.

Hybridizers, what do you look for in doubles?

    Thanks,
