Judging doubles

I agree with much of what has been said about judging doubles. However, I do think there may be room for improvement in the Handbook rules. The rules are pretty clear about the back layer and about the petaloids. A bloom with a single flower per stem from any other division would be summarily knocked down to less than 90 points if it had more or less than 6 perianth segments–why not doubles? The Handbook rules on petaloids also seem pretty clear–symmetry is the key. However, I’m not sure that the implication that many petaloids (the feather duster effect) necessarily reduces symmetry. (In fact, the opposite could be argued, but that is for another time.) My suggestion would be to end the Handbook paragraph on p. 93 after the words “decidedly double”. Let the judges decide what appears to be symmetrical.
I believe that perhaps some judges, myself included, have tended to think of the term “petaloids” as including corona segments. However, I’m not sure that is correct. In any event, the Handbook language does seem to imply that “petaloids” are perianth segments (from other than the back layer), and lacks any specific reference to corona segments. In my opinion, it would be helpful if the Handbook were clear on this aspect.
