Recently in Columbus OH they have been steeling metal grates over sewers.  They cost about $100 to replace and missing grates is dangerous.  They also are very hearvy.

  1. If they are the older ones with fancier designs, they are especially valuable.  I saw a book written about the distinctive designs on Japanese sewer lids.  The Japanese have acquired a reputation for nice design – flower arrangements and most aspects of life.

  2. In Baltimore it was the manhole covers in the middle of streets — truly dangerous.  No limit to what these people will steal.  The covers weigh a considerable amount and it must be kind of obvious to stand in the middle of the street and take one.
