New Zealand Update from the Brown’s

Daffnetters,

Below is an excerpt of a note from Marian Brown.  Marian asked that I pass this on to Daffnet that she and Michael are alright.

Nancy

Yes, Michael and I are fine.  Quake happened at 4.35am local, woke us up pretty quick.  Lasted a good minute, the most severe either of us have ever experienced.  Damage here at Loburn was restricted to a couple of wine glasses and a vase.  However Christchurch city (40km south) is another matter.  Facades of many buildings have fallen into the streets of the CBD, crushing cars.  Lucky it happened early on Saturday morning when businesses were empty.  Civil defence has swung into action and after shocks are continuing.

We have one daughter and her fiancee in ChCh at present.  They have no power and lots of china and glassware damage, though nothing structural.  They’re coming out to us at the earliest opportunity but the roads are chaotic as the traffic controls are out, petrol stations can’t pump etc etc.

There is some flooding near the rivers and liquefaction near the coast.  Quake was centred 30km inland (Darfield) and 35km deep.  Fault lines run throughout Canterbury so we’re always aware of the potential for a big shake.

Please pass on via daffnet that we’re just fine and thank Bob Spotts for his earlier message.
