off topic: ant lion

Mary Lou:
In California we have something called an Ant Lion. It makes little “traps” like this to catch ants that may happen in. The sand is at the angle of repose, so they just slide down to the bottom and are caught by the Ant Lion who is lying in wait just below the surface at the bottom of the hole.
Googling images of Ant Lion shows traps just like yours. Apparently in other locales an ant lion is referred to as a doodlebug.
If you’re quick with a spoon, you may be able to dig one out of its burrow and see it.

  1. A  doodlebug by anyother name is still a doodlebug.  LOL  I didn’t know it was a Ant Lion. But I’ve dug many of them up, just looked like a bug to me.

  2. G’day All, This is the view of my new garden I moved into in January. Am thrilled as I find more daff bulbs coming up everyday. This garden is a lot colder than my previous place even though as the crow flies it is only a few miles away. The only reason I was 50ft in the air to take the photo was to prune an old gum tree which had many widow makers hanging and swinging in the breeze. This year rather than a daffodil competition our local Anglican Church decided to hold a flower and quilt display instead. We covered the beer bottles with green paper. 3. Hi Brenda,
I love seeing pictures of far off places! Do you have more pictures of the quilts? :)

  4. Breanda,

what a great garden!  It looks quite surreal with all the open parcelled land about.

Great idea to show the daff with the quilts!  Great backdrop.  I didn’t realize quilting was so popular in Australia.  I’m just starting a winter project with leftover silk from work.
